Think of the Car sun visor [หลังคาบังแดดรถยนต์, which is the term in Thai] as well as what enters your mind is a leather/vinyl covered flap. Pivoted at one end, it was parked along the top of the windshield, above the occupant’s head. Its single purpose was to block out the sunlight when driving down the road, consequently making every little thing visible regardless of the oncoming glare. For years, that is all that they did, and every person enjoyed it.

Then, eventually, the whole movement in the direction of featuring vehicle technology in new autos began and life would never coincide once again. Somewhere along the road, the modest sun-visor began to go upmarket, similar to the vehicles it was to be featured in. The fittings, as well as coverings, obtained fancier. Small mirrors, as well as slide-in storage ports, began to take a look. The mirrors went upmarket, getting backlights and all. Sliders expanded in capability and size, with space for whatever from parking tickets and sunglasses to CD’s, for while they lasted.

Someone then had the bright suggestion that if headlamps could be run immediately, why couldn’t the sun be blocked out without human intervention too. Call it the brilliant of sheer laziness or comfort, what you will, yet that is perhaps, just how the concept of a digital sun-visor was born. Yes, that’s right, someone decided to do a Jetsons on the bad, unsuspecting sun-visor. The life I tell you.

Setting aside personal questions over the enhancing creep of automobile innovation in new vehicles, the said sunlight visor is a brilliant as well as a complicated piece of technology. Things begin to go futuristic quick from here though, so listen. The fine boffins at Volkswagen R and D embedded a sci-fi piece of future tech into the windscreen of the car. What it does, is that utilizing some complex and dark wonderful item of engineering and technological wizardry to tint private sections of the windshield as and when needed.
