Cats are mysterious and curious creatures. And for those who have never had their own cat, it might seem as though they aren’t the most friendly. But the truth is, you can have a wonderful bond with your cat! You just need to make sure that you aren’t pushing their boundaries and that they feel as though they are in control.

If you are thinking of getting a cat or you want to increase the bond between you and your cat, here are some scientifically-based tips that you can use!

Let Them Make The First Move

So it might be tempting to pet a cat the moment you see it. But truth be told, that’s not the best way to gain a connection with them. There have been many studies throughout the years that have concluded that the best way to get a cat to like you, is by letting them make the first move.

If they don’t want your affection and you persist, it could result in the cat hurting you. But if you allow them to come to you, sniff you and react to your affection, they are more likely to like you a lot more.

Give The Cat Space When It Needs It

Following on from the above point, you must give your cat space when it needs it. Cats are like humans in the sense that they can have different moods. If your cat is in a particularly bad mood, give it some space so that it can calm down. When the cat is ready, it will then come up to you and show you affection. Cats are incredibly independent creatures that don’t like to be told what to do. So when they don’t like something you are doing, they will react by hissing, biting or retreating. If you notice this, treat them with the respect they require.

Play With Them Regularly

As with all pets, you should make sure that you take the time to get to know your cat and play with them. Even though cats are independent and like their own space, you should also try to play with them when they want to. A recent study shows that cats love to play with their owners – especially when an interactive toy is introduced. The study also showed that some cats preferred playing with their owners over food.

Only Pet Them Where They Like It

As with all animals, if you pet a cat in a place that it doesn’t like, it will react poorly. A study published online in 2015 recommended that cats like to be petted on their heads and cheeks – reacting by purring and rubbing up against you. If you want your cat to like you, it’s a good idea to stroke them when they are showing you affection.
