With just a screwdriver, universal adapter, and a wire stripper, it is possible to install a step switch with our own hands. We need only take a few precautions and follow a few simple steps to place an electrical device that will allow us to turn on and off the access current to a bulb that, for example, we have housed in a floor lamp.
The Procedure, Step By Step
- First, and as a general rule when handling the electrical installation, we must take some necessary safety measures. We must cut the current of the light of the house in the light box, or at least deactivate it if we want to maintain the functions of some appliances. It is necessary to install with always dry hands, to avoid risks of discharges and short circuits.
- Open the step switch: Most of the switches have two or three screws to hold the two pieces of which it is composed. With the screwdriver, we loosen them to access the cables.
- Separate the wires: After deciding the point of the cable where we are going to place the step switch, we must separate the two small cables there. A distance between 3 and 5 centimeters will be sufficient.
- Cut the cable separately: With the help of the wire stripper, we will cut the one we have previously separated in half.
- Screw the copper from the cable: At each end of the cable that we have separated, we will strip half a centimeter, so that it can pass through the input and output presented by the Power plug with USB socket (ปลั๊กไฟ usb, which is the term in Thai) and through its internal connectors.
- Unscrew and screw: Next, the two ends of the bare wire have to enter the connectors of the switch, for which we must first unscrew them and, once each end has entered each of them, screw them.
- Close the step switch: Once the previous steps have been completed, it is time to close the switch in the opposite way to how we opened it, but not before tightening the cables. It will be enough for us to re-tighten the screws so that the two pieces are joined.
- Check its operation: If we have followed all the simple steps one by one, the step switch must work without any problem. In order to verify it, it will be enough to return to give the general current of the house or the concrete differential of the room and to turn on and off the light with the device.
