The ongoing pandemic has caused so much distress and the after-effects will be devastating for quite some time. Many small businesses are suffering significant financial losses and millions of people throughout the UK are losing their jobs. This has an extremely negative affect on our children, and, unless you take action now, they could begin exhibiting signs of anxiety and depression.

If your child is feeling anxious about life after the COVID-19 outbreak, here are some things that you should do:

Be Organised- personal organisation is the foundations of a healthy child’s mind. If your child’s room and the rest of the house is tidy and organised, it is easy for them to deal with just about any level of ongoing anxiety. As you are spending a lot more time at home during the COVID-19 lockdown, your child could spend an hour or so each day taking care of their room or helping mum and dad catch up on some household projects.

Get Enough Sleep-if your child is being affected by anxiety, it could be difficult for them to get to sleep early. Sleep is important to their overall physical and mental health and enough sleep will help relieve any anxiety they might be feeling about going outside again. If there are a lot of things in your child’s mind, you need to help them look for ways to calm down. Have them start doing things that make them happy such as art, music, or outside play. Have them go to bed early, so they can wake up feeling well rested and refreshed the next day. If your child has a difficult time going to sleep early, start slowly and try getting them to sleep 15 minutes early each night, until they can go to sleep early each night.

Practice Self-Care- when we take better care of ourselves physically, we soon find that we feel better mentally. Self-care is one of the most important aspects of any child’s development. Teaching them proper personal hygiene, healthy eating habits and ways to improve themselves through learning, is a good way to help them avoid the negative long term effects of anxiety and depression.
