A noisy air conditioner is the bane of both residential and commercial buildings. It is the negative rating on a company website and the main con of every review. The cause can be a simple fix or a costly repair, but that is nothing to the horrible noise consumers and family members have to endure. The first part of any solution is finding out exactly what the problem is. So here are the best solutions for various noise-making air conditioners in 2020.

Repair/Replacement

A screaming compressor is a sign that pressure is building inside the conditioner. This is not just noisy but dangerous. Such a problem is one example of repair or replacement being the solution. Anytime an air conditioner makes a screeching, screaming, banging, or clunking noise it is usually a sign that money will be exchanging hands with a professional repair service. The best advice here is to look for a warranty as that can cut down costs.

If the problem is big enough the entire unit will need to be replaced. Often, it is simply a matter of a component breaking down and a replacement part is installed. In other instances, it is a bit of debris that has gotten stuck in the unit and needs to be removed. All are great solutions that require a professional to accomplish.

Reduce Airflow

Two main noise-making causes that affect air conditioners are the register and grille. If something is off in either component the conditioner will make noise. Such problems have a lot of solutions, one of which is reducing airflow. Some conditioners have airflow in excess and this increases noise levels. The airflow negatively affects either the grille or register of the conditioner. Reducing the airflow is a very simple fix. Just put a damper in the unit and close it until airflow is normalized.

Increase the Duct and Register

Sometimes a noisy air conditioner has a duct and/or register that is too small. This is another example of an airflow problem. It is also another simple fix. Simply increase the size of the duct and register until the airflow is where it needs to be.

Restrict Registers

Another problem affecting registers is that they have louvers placed very close to increase the distance cold air is thrown. This also increases the noise that delivers that cold air. A nifty solution is to restrict the registers to form an air conditioner noise barrier. In some cases, this is as easy as getting smaller registers. Replacing the larger registers with smaller registers hinders how far they throw the air. In turn, this also reduces the noise that accompanies that air.

A sheet metal boot placed behind the register is another great air conditioner noise barrier. The problem can also be solved by adding additional registers, boots, and ducts to the existing duct’s trunk. This relieves the air being hurled by the larger registers to dampen sound as well.

Remove Face Dampers

Face dampers are placed in a conditioner to direct air away from the fan. They also have a tendency to scream while doing it. The great thing about this problem is that it is an example of a screaming air conditioner that does not require huge repairs. All that needs to be done is to remove the damper and replace it with a barrier that does not scream at its job. An inline damper placed further away from the fan is a good example. It redirects the air and deadens any sound as well.

Replace the Fan Motor

Replacing the motor on a fan is something that needs to be done if the unit starts screeching. Basically, the screech is a sign that the bearings of the motor have gone bye-bye. So in order to eliminate the sound a new motor will have to be installed.
