Our siblings are our partners in crime from the time we are born. Apart from the blood relation, we share a million other things, such as clothes, secrets, and so on with our siblings. Besides, they are our ride or die who stand tall next to us even in the ugliest of circumstances. To honour the strongest bond of protection, Indians celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandha.

What is Raksha Bandhan?

As the name suggests, it is derived from two words, Raksha and Bandha. While Raksha stands for ‘protection’, Bandhan indicates the act of tying. The brother-sister duo celebrates their strong bond between them by rakhi tying and exchanging raksha bandhan gifts. Typically, sisters tie a sacred thread on a brother’s wrist, which is termed as a ‘Rakhi.’

When a sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, she prays for his physical well being for a lifetime. The rakhi is customary on Raksha Bandhan since it acts as an armour to protect brothers from every haphazard. As per Hindu scriptures, there is a specific rakhi tying muhurtaon the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan. Moreover, many Indians believe that rakhi works its wonder when it is tied on the correct hand.

On which hand should we tie a rakhi?

Traditional ancient texts suggest that a rakhi should be tied on the right wrist. Since the right hand indicates the correct path, it controls the mind and body. On the other hand, many Indians believe that using a left hand is inauspicious. Therefore, a sister should tie a rakhi on the right wrist of her brother’s hand.

The significance of a rakhi on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan is ayurvedic as well as spiritual. Ayurveda suggests that tying rakhi on the right-hand helps in the regulation of two essential elements, such as:

  • Kapha
  • Pitta

Both these elements, Kapha and Pitta, consist of three elements of the body, such as water, fire, and air. When water, air, and fire flow together, our health improves to a greater extent. Additionally, our brother begins to feel secure than usual with a rakhi on their right wrist.

On the other hand, tying rakhi on the right-hand combines the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shiva. In addition to this, Goddess Durga showers her emotional and material strength as well as knowledge on our brothers based on spiritual findings.

While rakhis are crucial, gifts are also a pivotal part of the celebration. After the sister finishes tying the rakhi, the brothers usually give gifts to sisters. Finding a rakhi gift for married sister can also be difficult. Under such a scenario, surprise them with personalised gifts to ensure they feel special.

Personalised gifts on Raksha Bandhan indicate that the giver has gone an extra mile to make the recipient feel loved on such a special occasion. Additionally, personalised gifts transform an ordinary gift into a lifetime treasure.

Celebrate this Raksha Bandhan with the right values and rituals for the lifelong protection of the brothers. While shopping for a rakhi gift for sisters or brothers, invest in a good piece based on their likes and interests.
