When packing for a Bahamas yacht vacation, it can be overwhelming deciding what to pack. A private yacht charter is a little different than vacations at a resort or on a cruise ship, so you may need to alter your packing just a little bit.

Luggage: There isn’t a lot of storage space on luxury yachts, so take a soft-sided luggage or duffel bag that you can easily fold away. If you bring a hard suitcase, it can damage the woodwork and paint of the yacht. Duffel bags are the easiest to store away.

Clothing: You want to bring summer clothing for a Bahamas vacation. This can include skirts, shorts, light T-shirts, and bathing suits. You may also want to consider collared shirts, summer dresses, and light trousers if you want to eat ashore at many restaurants, since some will want customers to follow a certain dress code. If you will be spending a lot of time on the water, you may also want to bring along some T-shirts to add a layer of protection from the sun while on a jet ski. The Bahamas sun can be brutal.

Shoes: Some yachts will have guests abide by a “bare feet” rule when on board. A pair of sandals with a white sole and tennis shoes are fine when wandering around the deck. Heels may damage the deck and shoes with a black sole can cause unsightly scuffmarks. You can bring these shoes for venturing out on land, but you will have to take them off as you come back on board, so it’s best to find shoes that can do double duty.

Accessories: A Bahamas yacht vacation is expected to be sunny, so you want to bring along sunscreen, sunglasses, and headwear to stay protected. A personal music player and a good book or two are great if you plan to lounge out on most afternoons. If you don’t want to lug around books, make sure you can read your electronics in the sun. You definitely want to bring a camera, preferably something waterproof, to document all your adventures.

Medications: Don’t forget to bring along any prescriptions you need. While the yacht may be stocked with some seasick meds, it doesn’t hurt to bring along a couple of remedies just in case you need them.

Other Tips: Leave anything of value at home, especially if it’s not waterproof. Be sure to pack light because you probably won’t wear half of what you intend to bring. You may want to bring more than one hat, since the wind can blow one away, especially while out on the open water. Bring essentials such as batteries for electronics. You may find these hard to find in non-tourist parts of the islands.
